Amelia is an 8-year-old girl who wishes she could have someone to play with. She
lives with her mom who works two jobs, meaning that Amelia has almost no time to
spend with her mom. While the father’s fate is unknown (to us), it is clear that he is
not around the house, and therefore not in Amelia’s life. As a result, she spends most
of her days by herself, wishing that she could have a friend who can be there for her,
even though she doesn’t quite know how to make friends herself, or rather she’s too
scared to make the first step. Despite being alone, she spends her time doing
whatever she can find; one of those hobbies includes making shadow puppets. Yet
even she knows that shadow puppets can’t fill the void within her. One night Amelia
wishes on a star that she could have a friend of her own. Little does she know that
her wish comes true, her shadow puppets come to life. One (known as Umbra)
becomes an evil monster, while the other (known as Lumos) becomes a friend,
giving Amelia the one thing she never had before. In their fight against Umbra,
Lumos is knocked against the wall being cornered; Amelia leaps into action to
defend Lumos from harm (as it did for her). From that she understands what it
means to be a true friend, to be there for them through thick and thin.
Lumos is the friendly shadow that teaches Amelia what it means to be true friend.
While this shadow’s origins may be unknown, they do however hold a purpose; to protect their
newfound friend Amelia. Lumos can shapeshift into many different things, either by instinct or command. For the most part, they seem to be a more gentle soul in nature (unless provoked), and will do whatever it takes to protect those they care about.
Umbra is the malicious shadow that does everything it can to hurt Amelia, seeing
her as their “oppressive” puppet master. At first they are not evil or sinister, but
they soon look around confused, and agitated. It doesn’t listen to Amelia, unlike
Lumos, and it soon lashes out against Amelia by making a scary face to her, which
leads to Lumos smacking them upside the head. Umbra retaliates against Lumos and
Amelia by turning into a large bear and trying swiping at Lumos, and then goes right
to Amelia. Umbra keeps antagonizing them until they turn into a dragon as a last
resort. Ultimately they fail when the sun comes up, which inadvertently gives
Amelia the courage to stand up for her friend.
